Why We Started Boss Cow | Our Founding Story
We’re Sam and Kevin, the husband-and-wife founders of Boss Cow, a Pennsylvania-based clean-label food company. We started it after our own health experiences changed the way we look at food.
Discovering A2/A2 Dairy
For more than a decade, I thought I couldn’t tolerate dairy. Whenever I ate conventional dairy, I’d end up doubled over in pain and bloated for days. Eventually, I stopped eating it entirely because the reaction was never worth it.
Then I found A2/A2 dairy. For the first time in years, I could eat real dairy again without the pain and bloating I’d come to expect, and after avoiding it for so long, that was a huge deal for me.

It mattered enough that while Kevin and I were living in California for one of my travel nurse practitioner contracts, we joined a local dairy co-op and drove two hours each way to pick up A2/A2 dairy from a farm we trusted. That’s how hard it was to find, and how much better I felt on it. I wanted to understand why I could tolerate it when conventional dairy had caused me so many problems, and the more we learned, the more we wondered why dairy this incredible was so hard to get. That’s when the idea for Boss Cow started.
Food Was Personal for Both of Us
Kevin has his own long history with food and health. He’s lived with Crohn’s disease for decades, which pushed him to look closely at what he was eating. Over time, he moved away from heavily processed food and conventional junk food and started building simple meals around real ingredients, quality meat, and real dairy.
For both of us, eating better was never about following a trend. It came from years of paying attention to how different foods made us feel.
What I Saw as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
My work gave me another view of the food system. I spent more than a decade in pediatric cardiac intensive care, and I watched kids recover from major procedures, including heart surgery, while being served heavily processed foods like soda and pancakes with syrup made with high-fructose corn syrup. It was hard to see nutrition treated as an afterthought during such a critical part of their recovery.
I also watched families try to make better choices while surrounded by products full of artificial additives, preservatives, and heavily processed ingredients. Families shouldn’t have to work this hard to find food made with real, recognizable ingredients.
Meeting Family Dairy Farmers
As we learned more about A2/A2 dairy, we started driving around and meeting farmers in person. We visited family dairy farms, asked a lot of questions, learned about A2/A2 cows, and listened to farmers explain how they cared for their animals and their land. We met people who knew their cows individually and cared deeply about pasture quality, soil health, and animal welfare.
We also saw how hard it was for small family farms to compete with massive dairy corporations and industrial supply chains. So we decided early on that if we built a food company, we wouldn’t buy anonymous dairy from whichever supplier was cheapest. We wanted to know our farmers, understand how the cows were raised, and have Boss Cow’s growth support the regenerative family farms doing things the right way.
Building Boss Cow
Together, these experiences led us to start Boss Cow. A2/A2 dairy let me enjoy dairy again. Kevin’s Crohn’s moved us toward simpler, less processed food. My years in healthcare showed me how badly families needed better choices. And meeting farmers showed us that better food starts with the people, animals, and land behind it.
We started Boss Cow to make the kind of food we wanted in our own home: real ingredients, thoughtfully sourced A2/A2 dairy, and standards we could stand behind. None of that is the cheap way to make food. Our cheese costs several times what conventional dairy would, and we’ve turned down easier, less expensive options more than once to keep it this way. That tradeoff is the whole point, and it’s one we’ll keep making.
Today, Boss Cow makes clean-label pantry staples with A2/A2 dairy and carefully sourced ingredients. We leave out seed oils, artificial dyes, preservatives, soy, and unnecessary fillers.

Boss Cow began because we wanted better food for ourselves. Now we’re building it for other families, and for the family farms that make it possible.
